*****FROM GREG WATANABE*******
In an effort to respond to some of the negative comments about this sketch, I offer an explanation (note, I didn’t write this sketch):
This piece is primarily about how some people’s view of Thailand is distorted by it’s reputation as a destination for sex tours. There are many reasons how this came to be, none of them are Thailand’s per se. The U.S. military is probably the most to blame.
Clearly, as the sketch itself points out, there are many other aspects of Thailand to be proud of.
As an Asian American, the fetishization of the Asian female is a familiar topic. The view of Asian or Asian American females as sex objects is both an issue of sexism and racism. On a national scale, the stereotypical view of Thailand as a destination for exotic prostitution is an issue of de facto military occupation and economic colonization.
For me, this piece is about the stereotypes of Thailand and unfair and hypocritical treatment it receives from other countries.

that ain’t funny at all! it’s Offensive!

I hear you on that. I hope I didn’t come off as attacking your post or your decision to post an explanation. I’m also of Japanese descent, both parents, and if this clip were about, say, Japan’s sex industry and bar maids, I’d find the same humor and message in it. I guess my personal beef is more about how Asians and Asian-Americans are portrayed on American TV and in movies, that is, when they’re portrayed at all. I really enjoyed that “21 The Movie” clip 18MMW did. Sadly, how true it is.

Well, usually I’d rather let the work speak for itself, but sometimes I think it’s good to offer an alternate perspective. If we had performed this piece live and did a Q & A, and someone felt offended and felt we were insulting them, I would definitely feel compelled to explain the work. If I can win them over to our work, I feel like it’s worth it. If, after having heard me out, they still have problems with the piece, cest la vie.

It’s absurd that you have to even explain this piece. I understand that people have different sensitivities and what offends some might not even raise an eyebrow with others and vice versa. And there will always be people who misunderstand such clips as these. And it’s not all too hard to differentiate between hate-filled “humor” and humor done to make a point. As an Asian-American, I do rail against racism, but I had no difficulty in seeing that this piece is mocking stereotypes about Thailand.

People have zero sense of humor. It’s sad.

it would be ignorant to say that there was no sex in thailand. in fact it would be more ignorant to say that there was no sex anywhere. thailand might have a bad rep with the sex industry but who doesnt? i’m thai and when i first saw this video i was very displeased with such an emphasis on sex. but being that it might be or is true, parodies like this shouldnt be taken so seriously since they exaggerate truth. its a decent vid however its a bit over doing it…
