Cultural And Geographic Diversity Make Thailand Unique

Author: Patrick Orion  |  Category: phuket

Thailand is one of the most popular locations for travelers in search of a quiet and serene destination. Thousands of travelers visit Thailand on a yearly basis, and the numbers show no signs of stopping. Thailand, formerly known as Siam, delivers it’s visitors a vacation that they will not soon forget. It is a destination that vacationers look forward to returning to time and again, and for good reason. What is it about Thailand that gets this type of response? It has to do with the wide variety of activities, cultural diversity, friendliness, and beauty.

Thailand is a very diverse country in terms of geography. The northern territory is very mountainous and covered with incredible forests. The north eastern territory, know as Issan is more of a plain, know for it’s agricultural output – mainly rice farming. Traveling to the southern states, one finds a great number of tropical islands with fantastic beaches. Koh Samui and Phuket are two of the most popular beach resort areas.

In addition to it’s diversity in geography, Thailand is also know for it’s cultural diversity as well. A strong influence from the Chinese in the early years has added a distinct flavor to the national mix. It is also the only country in Southeast Asia that has never been colonized. However it did experience a period inspired by the west, which influenced the culture. It is this diversity that adds to it’s appeal to many western visitors.

Thailand has also gained notoriety throughout the world for it’s famous nightlife. Bangkok is a major cosmopolitan city with many clubs, discos, and bars that cater to all tastes. The resort cities of Pattaya, Koh Samui, and Phuket all have a vibrant night life that caters to those with a bit of a wild side. Although there is much night life to be found, most resort areas are also very family friendly.

A lot of people that look at Thailand think that it is still an underdeveloped country, this is far from the truth. They have a very advanced infrastructure for both transportation and technology. Their public transportation is cheap and well run. It is easy to navigate your way around the city or country by bus, train, airplane, or taxi. Thailand also has a very robust technology infrastructure. Visitors will find internet cafes on what seems like every corner, as well as high speed internet in most decent hotels.

There are many great things that make Thailand a wonderful country to visit, only a few of them were covered here. The beautiful beaches, friendly people, and cultural diversity make this a destination that people want to come back to again and again. This should be on everyone’s list of places to visit in Asia.

One of the most popular travel destinations in Thailand is Pattaya. It has some great sightseeing opportunities like the Sanctuary Of Truth.

Phuket (pronounced approximately as poo-get) is Thailand’s largest island and has become a popular travel destination. It has rich night life, many beaches, and influences from many different religions and cultures. Several airlines, such as Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways, Air Asia, Firefly, and Noli Air provide flights to Phuket from Bangkok. Thai Airways also provides flights from London to Bangkok.

Phuket International Airport is Thailand’s second largest airport. Airport shuttle bus service is the most economical choice. Local buses run from Phuket to all the major beaches. You can also choose from minibus service, or taxi.

Phuket high season is from November through May, but the island is generally hot and humid all year long. The summer monsoon season consists mornings and afternoons that are sunny and clear while the evenings are mostly rainy. Residents consider May to October the “cool season.”

The islands caters to a wide range of people from Parents with their kids, beach bums, and Bar flies to all budgets and taste. Phukets has 12 beautiful beaches with white sands and clear water. You can gain easy access to the beaches from winding coastal roads.

There are numerous attractions to take in when you visit Phuket. The thing about these cabaret type shows is that they blend tradition with humor and fantasy. You will find that they keep humor in their shows. You will not be disappointed if you are able to catch the group know as ‘ladyboys’ of Simon Cabaret. The show will rival any you see in Las Vegas, and many include pyrotechnics.

Many sites in the Phuket area have spectacular sunrise and sunset view. Promthep is one of the most popular viewing areas, allowing visitors to see the island of Phi Phi and the ocean in between when the weather is good. Phuket itself is a small, quiet provincial capital town with many locally owned shops selling surprising goods. The Old Town has an old-fashioned mixture of Chinese and European colonial architecture.

If you decide to visit Patong’s Bangla Road during the evening, bring an open mind, because you’ll see nightlife that looks like nothing you’d see at home. The Wat Chalong temple is very important to Phuket, and thousands of visitors see it each year. Wat Chalong has a long, fascinating history as the spiritual center of Phuket.

IBAP Q&A on work permits in Phuket

The International Business Association of Phuket or IBAP monthly meeting last Friday evening was held at the nice setting of PG’s Steak and Rib House beside the swimming pool The Yorkshire Inn in Patong.
IBAP members and guests came for a Question and Answer session with representatives from the Phuket Provincial Employment Office (or Labor Department), to speak about work permits here in Phuket, a difficult but important issue for most foreign residents.
Khun Janya Yingyong, a Labour officer and 2 independent translators tried to answer the Members and guests’ questions, some of which were prepared beforehand online at www.IBAP-Phuket.org.

For example one asked: “I am currently teaching in Thailand. Another school has asked me to do some hours teaching for them. Can I legally do so with the work permit for the other school? If not, could you please advise me what I should do?” The labour official answered through the translator that it was not legally possible to work for 2 schools at same time:
“It is not allowed to do that for other schools; it doesn’t allow to do that.”
Another member asked “While still in the USA, what steps can I take to ensure a smooth process in obtaining a work permit?” The reply was more positive for foreigners, known here as ‘aliens’:
“In the case of an alien still abroad, ask your employer to send documents to the Employment Office; submit all docs; Thai employer can consult; when alien arrives they can get work permit.”
A controversial subject was permits for volunteer work, especially among retirees, as they said it was illegal:
“If you hold retirement, you’re not allowed to work, even volunteer, it’s illegal.”
Michael Massey, president of IBAP, had to calm some of the members;
Denny Bowman, IBAP Treasurer, tried a follow up question, which got a better reply:
“If you have a retirement visa, can you serve as a board member of say Lions or Rotary Club or non-profit organization; can you serve as a Board Member for an organization like that?”
“as long as you don’t sign any paper, you can be a member of any club.”
But one member was not still not satisfied
“when you don’t have work permit, can’t do volunteer work, it really amazes me…
The reply then clarified that it was possible for specific volunteers like Tourist Police:
“For non Thai helping the government like police, they can work without work permit, because it is short time, not long time.”

Perhaps the most surprising and potentially damaging announcement came when they suddenly said the work permit fees would soon be increased:
“The coming law the price is about 20,000 baht per 2 years.”
Despite seeking clarification, it was still not clear if the new fee would combine years and/or visa fees:
“The work permit is independent of visa, in the future, coming soon, it will be 20,000 baht for 2 years.”
A couple of members also complained about capital or investment rules, and having to apply each time they travel in & out of the country, and it was difficult for the staff to answer then.
Denny told Andaman News later he has just had an invitation by the Labour office to ‘look at how IBAP can ease some of the difficulty by helping getting signage into English and confirming clear instruction on papers, forms, etc.
This is part of what IBAP was designed for. This is one very big step in Value Added for the entire working community here.’
Let’s hope this leads to better communication between all officers and residents here.
