When people travel to South East Asia for the first time, most have Thailand at the top of their list of destinations to visit. It is not an accident that so many people visit Thailand first. It is beautiful, easy to get around and has many things to do for any type of tourist or traveler.

Even though it is popular, it still can be overwhelming when visiting such a vastly different culture. Proper planning is a must and here are some ideas for exciting activities that will actually be a little different than what the average tourist will take part in.

Ralaigh Beach, Krabi. One of the most popular tourist areas in Thailand is Krabi Province. It is filled with beautiful beaches and lush green islands. Kharst formations jut out of the South China sea and in one spot in particular, you can climb them with the safety of a guide. Experienced and new climbers from all over the world flock to the sandy beaches of Ralaigh to climb their world class routes.

Elephant Trek in Khao Sok – A beautiful National Park in Southern Thailand, it is less of a circus than the elephant treks in Chang Mai. The elephants seem to be treated fairly and look healthy in Khao Sok and to sit upon this gentle giant is a thrill. They manage to maneuver down steep hills and over rough terrain with ease as you hang on hoping not to take a tumble off your high perch. Stay in one of the many bungalows in the park and spend days exploring the trails, waterfalls and wildlife.

Northern Thailand is one of the most popular spots for anyone traveling the country. People visit hill tribes, take cooking courses, shop in the famous night market or head up to Pai to chill out and relax. But a meditation course is an incredible way to immerse yourself in the culture. Find your centre as you meditate, learn tai chi and cleanse by eating a vegetarian diet. Your body will thank you.

The Bridge on the River Kwai was made famous in a movie, but it’s story lives on in Kanchanaburi. Destroyed by air raids during the war, it has been re-built and tourists are free to walk on the famous death railway. POW and Thai citizens were used to build the bridge and the brutalities that they faced are documented in the JEATH War Museum and great care is taken to maintain the cemetery.

Bangkok has a great transit system and getting around is quite easy. From the subway to skytrain, river boats to taxi’s. But one mode of transportation that will give you a thrill and memories to last for years will be to hire a tuk tuk. A famous sight on any postcard or photo of Thailand, these are small 3 wheel motorbikes that can carry 2 to 3 people and whip in and out of traffic at zippy speads.

Thailand is famous for its beaches for swimming and fun in the sun. But another place to relax in the water is at one of its many waterfalls. Normally you will find locals bathing here, you can get to know the people as you cool off in crystal blue water. They are found all over the country, so ask around and go ahead and visit one.

Thailand is one of those countries that most people return to again and again. And with good reason. These were only a few off the beaten path suggestions, but to take in everything that it has to offer, you will have to give yourself months to truly discover the land. From scuba diving and jungle trekking to fine dining and nightlife, it has something for every travelers needs.
