Cultural And Geographic Diversity Make Thailand Unique

Author: Patrick Orion  |  Category: phuket

Thailand is one of the most popular locations for travelers in search of a quiet and serene destination. Thousands of travelers visit Thailand on a yearly basis, and the numbers show no signs of stopping. Thailand, formerly known as Siam, delivers it’s visitors a vacation that they will not soon forget. It is a destination that vacationers look forward to returning to time and again, and for good reason. What is it about Thailand that gets this type of response? It has to do with the wide variety of activities, cultural diversity, friendliness, and beauty.

Thailand is a very diverse country in terms of geography. The northern territory is very mountainous and covered with incredible forests. The north eastern territory, know as Issan is more of a plain, know for it’s agricultural output – mainly rice farming. Traveling to the southern states, one finds a great number of tropical islands with fantastic beaches. Koh Samui and Phuket are two of the most popular beach resort areas.

In addition to it’s diversity in geography, Thailand is also know for it’s cultural diversity as well. A strong influence from the Chinese in the early years has added a distinct flavor to the national mix. It is also the only country in Southeast Asia that has never been colonized. However it did experience a period inspired by the west, which influenced the culture. It is this diversity that adds to it’s appeal to many western visitors.

Thailand has also gained notoriety throughout the world for it’s famous nightlife. Bangkok is a major cosmopolitan city with many clubs, discos, and bars that cater to all tastes. The resort cities of Pattaya, Koh Samui, and Phuket all have a vibrant night life that caters to those with a bit of a wild side. Although there is much night life to be found, most resort areas are also very family friendly.

A lot of people that look at Thailand think that it is still an underdeveloped country, this is far from the truth. They have a very advanced infrastructure for both transportation and technology. Their public transportation is cheap and well run. It is easy to navigate your way around the city or country by bus, train, airplane, or taxi. Thailand also has a very robust technology infrastructure. Visitors will find internet cafes on what seems like every corner, as well as high speed internet in most decent hotels.

There are many great things that make Thailand a wonderful country to visit, only a few of them were covered here. The beautiful beaches, friendly people, and cultural diversity make this a destination that people want to come back to again and again. This should be on everyone’s list of places to visit in Asia.

One of the most popular travel destinations in Thailand is Pattaya. It has some great sightseeing opportunities like the Sanctuary Of Truth.

Choosing a Stop Off Destination For Travel From Australia

Author: Jennifer Schellington  |  Category: Bangkok

A trip to Australia needs careful planning as it is a long way from any other continent. Travel times are usually very long (22 hours from Europe and 14 hours from the US.) A great option is to include a stop off on the way or way back from Australia. Alternatively you could stay longer and visit another country in the southern hemisphere.

Unless you are coming here for more than 3 weeks, I’d limit your onward travel and not try to do too much. Australia is huge and you need at least 3 weeks to do it justice. In fact, you’ll only be able to see a small part of this amazing country with 3 weeks.

So a stop off is a good idea and many choose to take a few days in Asia. It’s a good option as most of the flights from Europe stop to refuel in Asia so there is generally a very limited cost to including a stop off to your flight. It is also a great way to get you over the jet lag and break up the flight. See below for my stop off recommendations:

Bangkok and Thailand

Many Australians choose this destination for a holiday or a stop off on their way to Europe. There are a few operators flying to Thailand which keeps the prices reasonable. Plus, Thailand is still relatively inexpensive when you arrive.

For Bangkok I’d look to do the following:

1) A must visit is the Grand Palace. Whilst you can’t actually go into the Palace the buildings are beautiful and can be admired from the outside. This is the official residence of the King but is now only used for special occasions.

2) The Wat Sai Floating Market is a good one to visit and you can get on a barge outside the Grand Palace. It’s also good to combine a visit to the Royal Barges Museum. They have some fabulous boats on display that have been used by the King.

3) If shopping is your thing then head to Chatuchak Weekend Market . It’s easy to get lost here as the place is so large. It’s also a great place to eat as there are lots of restaurants. The market opens at 7am and I suggest you get there early to avoid the crowds and the heat.

4) If you would like to see more of Bangkok, then take a Segway Tour. This is a tour with a difference as you will be on a 2 wheeled electronic device. They are easy to use and they give you a real sense of freedom as you cruise the streets of Bangkok.

5) Enjoy the nightlife. A night in Bangkok is usually good value and we’ve all heard of the lady boy shows etc. Bars are a plentiful and generally offer a good night out.

If you would rather head to the beaches of Thailand then consider the area around Phuket. Jet Star fly directly to and from Phuket from Sydney and at certain times of the year there are special reduced fares.

Phuket is not for everyone though. This place is like Ibiza but in Asia. It’s big, very touristy and full of pubs, bars and restaurants. If you’d rather have a quieter experience then the areas around Phuket are lovely. Phi Phi Island is a popular day trip from Phuket but you can stay here instead. It is close to where they filmed the movie “The Beach.”

There isn’t room in this article to explore all the stop off alternatives. Other stop over options include Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong and Singapore. If you are travelling from the US then Fiji is a good stop off to break up the flight and see another beautiful island getaway.

If you have more time and are planning a longer trip to Australia (months rather than weeks) then I’d recommend combining your trip with New Zealand or even Bali. Flight times from Australia are only a few hours.

Onward Travel From Australia

If you are planning a trip to Australia, you’ve probably already worked out that it’s a long way from anywhere else! It also takes a long time to get here especially if you are travelling from Europe or the US. So, most try to combine a trip to Australia with a few other places just to make the most of being in the southern hemisphere and in this part of the world.

A stop off will only work if you have enough time. You need at least 3 weeks to visit Australia and then you will only be visiting a small proportion of this fantastic country. A 2 night stop off is do-able if you have a 3 week holiday to Australia.

A great destination for travel from Australia, as there are a few flight operators which keeps prices low. Once you are there, prices are still reasonable cheap too.

Whilst in Bangkok, here are some suggestive activities:

1) A must visit is the Grand Palace. Whilst you can’t actually go into the Palace the buildings are beautiful and can be admired from the outside. This is the official residence of the King but is now only used for special occasions.

2) Wat Sai floating market – take a barge tour from outside the Grand Palace (Make sure you bargain) and pick one that takes in the Royal Barges museum too. Here you can see the beautiful boats that were used for the King’s processions

3) If shopping is your thing then head to Chatuchak Weekend Market . It’s easy to get lost here as the place is so large. It’s also a great place to eat as there are lots of restaurants. The market opens at 7am and I suggest you get there early to avoid the crowds and the heat.

4) If you’d like to see the hidden gems of Bangkok and want to be a bit different then take a Segway Tours These are a two wheeled electronic device and are easy to use. A great way to see this city.

5) The Bangkok nightlife is certainly vibrant and its worth taking a trip into the heart of Bangkok to enjoy some of the action. Take in one of the infamous shows or just watch the world go by over a few drinks.

If you would rather head to the beaches of Thailand then consider the area around Phuket. Jet Star fly directly to and from Phuket from Sydney and at certain times of the year there are special reduced fares.

I’d only recommend Phuket if you are a party animal. It’s a bit like an Asian equivalent of Ibiza. It’s a very big resort with hundreds of clubs and bars and restaurants. If you are after a quieter holiday then I would head to Phi Phi Island. This is a popular day trip from Phuket but a great alternative if you need some quiet time. It is near where they filmed “The Beach.”

Unfortunately there isn’t room in this article to tell you about all the stop off places. i would also consider Hong Kong, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Fiji is another great destination, particularly if you are travelling from the US. This is a very idyllic set of islands, the perfect relaxing getaway.

If you do intend to spend a couple of months in Australia then I’d consider including a trip to New Zealand or even Bali to your plan. Both are only a few hours onward flight from Australia.
