Review: Fitne Tea – the Thai Way to Lose Weight Fast

Author: Normand Bachmeier  |  Category: traveling in thailand

I recently bought some Fitne Green Tea in Bangkok. It’s very popular in Thailand as a diet or weight loss drink, and is primarily used by Thai Muay Thai kickboxers who are trying to drop some weight and Thai women who are trying to do the same. The tea supposedly contains a natural herbal ingredient that makes you lose weight. It’s also advertised that regular consumption promotes a slimmer healthier figure and a better functioning digestive system. In reality though, it’s nothing more than an herbal laxative. So how does it taste and is it healthy?

I bought the Herbal Infusion Green Tea Flavored variety on Sunday afternoon and I drank two cups in the evening before going to bed. On Monday and Tuesday, I didn’t feel any different nor did my bathroom habits seem to be more unusual than normal. I continued drinking it throughout the day, drinking five cups of tea by late evening. That night, I spent a little more time in the bathroom than normal as not only was I urinating a little more, but my bowel movements were more frequent than normal too.

On Wednesday and Thursday I drank at least 4 cups both days. By Wednesday evening though, I noticed I was getting a slight stomach ache so I cut back on Thursday to 2 cups. On Thursday, my stomach was hurting a little but I was definitely feeling lighter and less weighed down. My skin was also starting to look clearer and slightly glowing. I also noticed I had a lot more energy than was normal, especially around 4pm when I would usually feel tired.

I’ve continued to drink the tea for the last two days, so I have now been drinking it for almost a week. I still feel lighter and, although I haven’t weighed myself, I can tell by the way my clothing is fitting I have probably lost four or five pounds. Yet I’ve been eating the same amount of food I usually eat. I plan on continuing drinking three to four cups of tea for the next few days and then will slowly cut down till I’m only drinking one cup a day. After two weeks, I will stop using it every day and drink only a couple of times a week, as I have heard from several Thai friends it’s not healthy to drink for long periods of time.

As far as taste goes, it tastes like green tea but a bitterer version of the green tea I drink. The back of the bag says that each 2.65 gramme tea bag contains 1500mg of Senna leaves, 500 mg of Senna pods, green tea leaves, and 150 mg of Garcinia Atroviridis. Garcinia Atroviridis is a hydroxy citric acid, which is a natural substance that is extracted from the rind of the fruit of the Garcinia Cambogia tree. It is apparently non-toxic and has been used for generations for appetite suppressing and weight loss. However, diabetics should never drink anything with this substance in it as it has a very bad glycemic reaction on the body. So Fitne tea is definitely out for somebody who has diabetes.

Overall, I think I was quite successful in my goal of losing some weight with Fitne. A five pound weight loss is good for only a week and, as the taste is not too bad, it didn’t really seem such a chore to be drinking it. I just substituted a few cups of this tea every day instead of the coffee I drank before.

As far as I know, it is a product that is mainly available in Thailand. Many Thai sellers sell it on eBay and ecrater though, so if you’re interested in trying some it shouldn’t be too difficult to get. Just remember to start out slowly and see how you feel before you decide to drink more than one cup a day, and also stop drinking it if you suddenly feel dizzy or light-headed as this could mean it’s causing your body to have a nasty glycemic reaction.

Dhani Jones Trains Muay Thai in Thailand

Author: Marcel Reyna  |  Category: traveling in thailand

NFL linebacker Dhani Jones aired his first episode of Dhani Tackles the Globe with the Travel Channel on Monday March 16, 2009. As stated by Dhani in his opening, he believes that one of the best ways to learn about other cultures is to participate in the sports of that culture. In “Muay Thai in Thailand” Dhani spends a week training to fight in a muay thai match.

Muay thai is a form of martial art boxing specific to Thailand. In the episode “Muay Thai in Thailand” Pit, Dhani’s trainer, takes Dhani jogging for four miles each morning, then teaches him how to use his fists, elbows, knees and feet to fight his opponent.

To learn what muay thai is, Dhani attends a match. There he witnesses an opening dance which the fighters perform. Later he learns this dance from Pit and performs it himself before his own match.

Dhani bravely ventures out into Thai culture. He even eats bugs. He visits a fortune teller, an occupation much respected in Thailand. She tells him that this is not his year for love. Sorry, ladies. But he did tell her his birthday, February 22, 1978. The fortune teller recommended that Dhani go barefoot in the grass every day to prepare for his fight and that the day of the fight was a good day for him.

Dhani finds plenty of grass for bare footing it at some temple ruins outside of Bangkok. It is a peaceful place away from the constant bustle of the city. He also relaxes by playing soccer with elephants.

Dhani Tackles the Globe is a show that both men and women can enjoy. Dhani Jones has a relaxed approach to his narration. He appears genuinely involved and interested in immersing himself in the target culture. The physical, sports nature of the show adds excitement and suspense. How will Dhani fare against a muay thai boxer? Dhani shirtless is also appealing.

Watch Dhani Tackles the Globe on Monday March 23 when Dhani travels to Switzerland and participates in a schwingen match. The show airs at 9 PM EST on the Travel Channel. March 30th he plays rugby in England. Then April 6th he is on to dragon boat racing in Singapore. It is jai alai in Spain on April 13th; then hurling in Ireland on April 20th.

You may also wish to check out Dhani’s blog available on The Travel Channel’s website. Dhani posted a poem titled “The Punch” about his muay thai experience.

Thailand’s Boxing

Author: Ozie Hudock  |  Category: traveling in thailand

Muay Thai “nak muay” is a form of hard martial arts that is practiced all over the world now. Muay Thai has a long history in Thailand, since it is a national sport there. Muay Thai is referred to as “The Art of the Eight Limbs”, as the hands, elbows, knees and shins are all used in this sport (art). Muay Thai has the ability to execute strikes using eight “points of contact”, as to “two points” or “four points” used in other forms of martial arts.

Muay Thai is a sport in which the opponents fight in front of spectators who went to watch for entertainment. Eventually, the bare-fisted fights went to wearing lengths of rope wrapped around their hands and forearms. Now, Muay is functioned as a means of physical exercise, self-defense, recreation, and personal advancement.

After the occurrence of a death in the ring happened, King Rama the VII pushed for rules for Muay Thai, and they included that the fighters should wear modern gloves and cotton coverlets over their feet and ankles. The fighters will also do a pre-fight dance called the “Wai Kru” to pay their respects while sealing the ring to keep them safe during their fight with their opponent. While they do their “Wai Kru” they will wear a headdress called a “Mongkon”. When the fighter is wearing the “Mongkon” they are not to touch it, the only one that can touch it is the teacher, cause it is bad luck, and the teacher will remove it before the fight starts.

There are seven different punching “Chok” methods that you can use, but one thing you don’t want to do is lock your arm when throwing a punch. Now, there are nine different elbow “Tee sok” methods, nine different kicking methods, eight different knee “Tee kao” methods and five foot-thrust “Teep” methods to use while fighting a Muay Thai fight.

This sport is the one of the most exciting sport out there right now. If you have never been to one you should try and go to one some time just to check it out and see how exciting it really is. Everyone likes to see two people beat the heck out of one another. Well, this sport has that and the fighters pay very much respect to everyone even each other before and after the fight. This sport is for all ages to do and to watch. So I recommend everyone to try to make it to watch a Muay Thai fight sometime.

How to Get an Education Visa (Student Visa) to Study in Thailand

Author: Temeka Paulshock  |  Category: traveling in thailand

A lot of people want to live in Thailand for longer than the 30 days that Thai immigration allows. But many don’t want to work while they’re here. That’s where getting an Education Visa or Student Visa can be useful if you want to study while you’re here. An Education Visa (Student Visa) in Thailand allows you to stay in the country for 1 year to 15 months, depending on which study course you sign up for and, most of the time, you don’t have to study eight hours a day five days a week either. If you decide to come to Thailand to study therefore follow these few simple steps and you should have no problem getting an Education Visa (Student Visa) for a year.

Apply for a Course of Study in Thailand – One of the most popular courses people who want to study in Thailand do is a Thai language course. They’re available all over Thailand, usually meet for only four hours a day or less and are not too expensive. You can also study Muay Thai, Thai Cooking, Gemology, Massage Therapy, Meditation, many different university courses and a whole host of other things. When you’ve decided which course you want to sign up for, send in the application form to the school of your choice along with any other requested paperwork and wait for the decision on acceptance.

Your Letter of Admission – Within a few weeks of applying to the school of your choice, you should receive a Letter of Admission. The letter must be printed on the school’s letterhead and must show the exact start date of the course plus which classes you are signed up for. With this letter, you can apply for an Education (Student) Visa. Without this letter, you cannot. Some schools will only send you an e-mail saying you’ve been accepted. Most of the time, this is NOT acceptable to Thai Immigration, so you will have to call the school and ask for a formal acceptance letter as you’re not likely to get an education visa without one.

Send in Your Application for Education Visa To Thai Embassy/Consulate – Take or mail your Letter of Admission, a photocopy of your passport (the page that has your photograph and identifying information on it), your passport, four passport sized photographs, and a completed visa application form (available by download from the Thai Immigration Bureau) to any Thai Embassy or Consulate. Make sure you send everything by registered mail if you mail it and be aware you might have to wait up to two weeks before you receive your passport with Education Visa, so allow plenty of time before your course of study begins. When I got mine, I sent everything to the Houston Consulate, who is extremely efficient, so the whole thing was completed and mailed back to me within 4 days. I sent a Federal Express number with my application though, so they could Fed Ex my passport back to me. Once you get it, the Education Visa will only be valid for 90 days, so you will have to extend it once you get to Thailand (Why? No-one really seems to know. The Thai Immigration authorities have many rules that don’t make sense but, once in Thailand, you realize there’s no point in arguing. Just follow what an official tells you to do, and everything will be fine).

Travel to Thailand – Once you are in receipt of your passport and Education Visa, you can travel to Thailand any time you want. The Education Visa will usually be activated as soon as you arrive in Thailand, so your first 90 days will begin from there. This is why you need to get the visa extended for a year as soon as possible as you don’t want to get caught short of the days necessary to do so. Immigration sometimes needs up to 15 days to complete the paperwork, and you may have to go back there a couple of times. If you don’t get it extended in plenty of time you will have to leave the country and go to Malaysia, Hong Kong or Singapore, apply for another Education Visa, and come back into Thailand again, which would be expensive and inconvenient.

Register at Your School in Thailand – Once in Thailand, you need to register at your intended school and pay all the fees as soon as possible. At this time, the school will give you a Registration Letter and a receipt for your tuition payment, and you can now take both of these to any Immigration office in Thailand to extend your education visa to 1 year.

Extending Your Education Visa To 1 Year- Take your Registration Letter and the tuition receipt to an Immigration office and apply to get your Education Visa extended for a year. They may do it while you wait, or you may have to go back in a few days. It seems to depend on how busy they are and sometimes even how friendly you are. There will be a small fee but once you have it, that’s all you’ll need for the rest of the year. Getting the Education Visa in Thailand is quite easy, just remember, once you have it you need to go to the school you signed up for on a regular basis. If you stop attending school, you will find very quickly that many schools will report your absence to Immigration and your Education Visa will be canceled. Then, when you leave Thailand, you could have problems at the airport or even have to pay a fine (fines run up to 20,000 baht – $575. The Education (Student) Visa in Thailand is intended for those who want to seriously study, not for those who want to come to Thailand and relax for a year. If you don’t want to study, you will have to come to Thailand on a tourist visa and then leave the country every 3 months to go to a Thai Embassy in a neighboring country to get another tourist visa.

How do you get an Education/Student Visa in Thailand? Follow these few steps, it’s easy! You can get an Education/Student Visa in Thailand for studying Thai, Massage, Muay Thai and more.

Most Dangerous Martial Arts

Author: Nilda Mithell  |  Category: traveling in thailand

There are many different kinds of martial arts, and tons of age old debate about which ones are the most effective in real world situations. I’m going to list what are the three most dangerous and effective arts in the world that can be applied in real world hand-to-hand combat situations.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

This is absolutely the most dangerous of all martial arts. It’s relatively young, actually very young compared to styles like Karate. BJJ was popularized in the early UFC by Royce Gracie, after tapping out opponent after opponent with his submissions. After that BJJ exploded in popularity and is now regarded as the most dangerous art in the world. A smaller opponent who knows BJJ can easily defeat a much larger opponent.

Muay Thai

This style is very practical and is based on striking. Hard hitting and effective would be a good description of Muay Thai. This martial art isn’t supposed to be pretty to watch, you’re not going to see a bunch of twirling kicks and flips. It’s based on simple yet dangerous strikes that get the job done.

Muay Thai originated from Muay Boran (Ancient Boxing). This was a military style use to fight to death and kill attackers from other countries like Burma.

Judo

This art is involves grappling and getting in close (much like BJJ), but focuses mainly on getting your opponent to the ground by way of throws, then immobilizing them. Judo has very practical applications and is incorporated into the mixed martial arts world as well by skilled practitioners such as Karo “The Heat” Parisyan.

These three are not the only effective martial arts out there, deserving an honorable mention would be Karate and the other predominately striking styles like Tae Kwon Do. Each of them can be highly effective if used properly and with a high skill level.

Finding Sportswear in Thailand

Author: Milly Dular  |  Category: traveling in thailand

If you play sports and happen to be in Bangkok, Thailand, you could think it might be difficult to buy sportswear and sports equipment. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. Buying sportswear and sports equipment is easy in Bangkok as there are so many good sporting goods stores with lots of choice. Bangkok prices for sporting goods is also often much cheaper than western prices. If you’re going shopping for sporting goods in Bangkok, these stores and malls have great selections of sports equipment.

MBK – One of the absolute best places to buy sports equipment or sporting goods in Bangkok is at MBK Mall. Short for Mahboonkrong, MBK Mall is an enormous mall famous for its cheap products. It’s located right next to National Stadium sky train station so is very easy to get to, and the selection of sportswear and sports equipment is excellent.

From small market stall-style shops to larger sporting goods stores, you can buy many sports items here. Sportswear (t shirts, shorts, sports bras, sports underwear, running shoes, golf equipment, swimsuits, NFL gear, even skateboards and rollerblades can be bought at MBK. As it’s also one of the cheapest places to shop in Bangkok, look for the sporting goods you want here first.

Chatuchak Weekend Market – Held on Friday nights and all day Saturday and Sunday, Chatuchak Weekend Market has a great selection of sporting goods. Sports t-shirts, football shirts, running shoes, golf shoes, Muay Thai shorts and boxing gloves, swimsuits, tennis shoes, tennis balls, golf balls, skateboards, skateboard shirts and shorts, bicycle helmets – so many types of sportswear and sports equipment is available at Chatuchak. You can also bargain here, so the price you finally get could be the cheapest anywhere in Bangkok.

Super Sports – Super Sports is a big Thai sporting chain, which has over 40 stores throughout Thailand. The Super Sports stores are usually in Robinsons, Zen or Central department stores and sell everything. Super Sports is a particularly great place to buy treadmills, exercise bikes, footballs, skateboards, basketballs, tennis equipment, running equipment and cycling equipment. Prices are definitely higher here, but the quality is superb and they do sell almost everything you might be looking for. I bought my last treadmill here and got a great price plus free delivery.

Sports Zone – There are three Sports Zone stores in Bangkok, one in Siam Square, one in Din Daeng and one in Chonburi. Sports Zone prices are more expensive than MBK or Chatuchak, on average, but usually cheaper than Super Sports. They also sell lots of brand name sporting goods for just about every sport.

FBT Sports Complex – This is probably the super store for sports equipment in Bangkok. It’s been open for more than 50 years and has almost 3,000 employees. Seven floors of sports equipment, you can buy equipment for rugby, American football, baseball, hockey, swimming, tennis, basketball, squash, Muay Thai, volleyball and a hundred other things in between. They also sell all the top brands like Adidas, Nike, Fila, Reebok, Converse and Speedo. Prices too are very competitive. FBT Sports Complex is located in the Ramkamhaeng area of Bangkok. Just take a taxi and tell the driver “FBT Sports Complex”.

One final note, although it is very easy to find sporting goods in Bangkok, finding large or extra large sizes can be a lot more difficult as Thais are quite small and thin. This also means some Thai brands of sportswear have shorter legs for things like shorts and pants so always try everything on before you buy.

How to Vary Your Attacks in Muay Thai

Author: Reggie Aki  |  Category: traveling in thailand

The cut kick, delivered to the legs of the opponent, is one of the pillars of muay thai. The jab-cut kick combo is as prevalent in competition as the jab is in boxing. This is an opportune technique that can be used taken advantage of unlike in boxing matches. In fact, it’s a great rule of thumb that every combo in muay thai be ended with a kick. This is especially effective against boxers who were never required to defend against kicks. Practice concluding every combo with a kick to either the legs, the body, or the head of your opponent.

The muay thia clinch, or collar tie, is one of the most devastating techniques to the art and is still underutilized despite this. Controlling the head of your opponent is often a powerful strategy in many martial arts. Grabbing the opponent around the neck and pulling his head downward to deliver the knee strikes to the face will instantly dispose of any opponent who is untrained in the art of muay thai.

Skip knees, the technique of skipping into the knee strike, can deliver much more power when thrown to the body of the opponent. Practice straightening your leg out completely before delivering the knee. This is a very common mistake, and even practitioners of many years forget to straighten out the leg completely and take advantage of the raw power of the strike.

Kicking with both legs is of paramount importance. Since so much of what ties success depends on a high-low concept, that is, mixing up attacks which are thrown at the head with attacks which are thrown at the legs, being able to kick at all three targets from both sides of the body grants many more are possibilities for attacks, many of which your opponents will not expect. Fluidity with both arms and legs, from punches to knees to kicks from both sides, is enough to overwhelm the most experienced strikers, especially boxers and practitioners of traditional martial arts.

The lethal kicks off this art combined with its telltale clinch technique make muay thai an explosive type of offense against any opponent. Using these as a basis any fighter can easily enter MMA competitions and meet success. Muay thai is an incredibly dependable premise in MMA and need only be combined with the essentials of grappling defense, like sprawling and training for full mounts, side mount, and full guard.

Muay Thai as a Fat Burning Exercise

Author: Leoma Sur  |  Category: traveling in thailand

I am a novice to Karate. I started Practicing Shorin-Ryu Karate about 9 months ago. I was grossly over weight when I started. At 41 years old, I was about 285 pounds. But I was good at denial. I thought I was strong, I thought I was healthy, but I wasn’t. I didn’t realize this until I signed my children up at karate and I was watching some of the young and old students at the dojo exercising.

I saw amazing things from the students. I watch a man who at 70 years old was doing cartwheels and tumbles. He started karate in his mid 50s and is now a third degree black belt at 70. That was inspiration to me and still is. I watch the sensei’s (many of whom at in the late teens) do flying back flips and flying sidekicks.

Here I was sitting on the sideline watching, getting fatter.

Why not sit on the sideline? After all weren’t we all taught that violence is bad? That people who have knowledge in martial arts are dangerous?

Nothing could be further from the truth. At every karate session the students (adult and children) state a creed that they will use karate only as a last defense and only to protect ourselves and others. Students have been removed from martial arts training due to fighting in school when they should not have been. Other students have used their training to hold down a student that was fighting until teachers or administrators arrive. I was impressed – again.

I started my karate training going to three one hour sessions per week. When I first started I tried to do so many push-ups that every muscle in my chest and back hurt. It hurt so bad that I couldn’t even expand my chest to cough! But I kept going.

I then found out that black belt candidates are required to run 3 miles in 30 minutes. Getting my black belt is very important to me (my 3 daughter and I should be eligible at the same time), so I started working out at lunch for an hour. For that hour during lunch I performed just cardio. I started by riding the stationary bike, then walking on the treadmill, then using the elliptical. No matter what it was, I did for an hour straight. Now I can easily do one hour on the stairmaster (which I used to be afraid of) then follow up with another hour on the treadmill or elliptical (if time permits).

I’ve been feeling so good about myself and my accomplishments, I added Muay Thai kickboxing to my workout schedule. I’ve been doing Muay Thai for about 2 months (still a white belt in Muay Thai, an orange in Karate) and have a really fun time with that. Muay Thai is a lot of kicking and hitting with some self defense. There is no kata (practice fighting) and we don’t do much sparring. But the workouts I find very tough and unique.

After I do my one hour of Muay Thai I go to a karate class for an hour. As you can imagine, I move a little slow after that Muay Thai class.

After maintaining this schedule for about 9 months, I have lost 50 pounds. I am down to 230 pounds. I have been lingering around the 230 mark for a while, but my wife says I am gaining muscle mass. I went from wearing 44 inch waist pants to easily fitting back into 36 inch pants. My blood pressure went from about 140/100 to 100/70.

The best thing is not the weight loss. It is that I am doing this along with my children. My daughters go to class in the other karate dojo while I am practicing in the other. I have three daughters, so karate can be a little expensive (sparring equipments, weapons, tuition, etc.). However, when my daughters are off to college, I will sleep a little better at night knowing that my daughter can defend themselves.
