Catching a Muay Thai Fight in Thailand

Author: Teri Cara  |  Category: traveling in thailand

The action packed sport of Thai boxing is Thailand’s local sport that is fast gaining popularity in the international sporting arena. This exciting form of martial arts is one of the nation’s most loved events that are attended by crowds of locals and tourists looking for an exciting time of fun and entertainment. Locally known as Muay Thai, Thai boxing can be best experienced in Phuket at the Patong Boxing Stadium which is located along Sai Namyen Road. The stadium comes alive with crowds of chattering folks, loud cries of support and vibrant music as the boxing match unfolds with much excitement and vigour.

It is said that the art of Thai boxing goes back to the 15th century originating from the nation’s war period with the Burmese. There are several rituals performed prior to the beginning of a match. The fighters who are involved in a match engage in a traditional pre-fight type of dance that is known as the ‘Ram Muay.’ During the dance, the fighter wears a special headband earned after much training from the master. The dance involves the fighter bowing 3 times before their master in a show of appreciation and respect. Once the opening ceremony is over, the action begins in the ring.

Every Thai boxing match is made up of 5 rounds that each last 3 minutes. All body parts except for the head are considered to be fair targets during the fight. The sounds of drums and cymbals, along with other instruments, add a frenzied musical accompaniment to the happenings in the ring. The music drops or heightens depending on what is taking place in the fight.

Various areas in Phuket display a pre-meditated Thai boxing show for tourists. If you are looking to experience the real art of the sport, be sure to visit the Patong Boxing Stadium in Phuket.

Study In Thailand

Author: Eric Shinney  |  Category: traveling in thailand

Many visitors come to Thailand to learn something. Thailand has courses, both certified and otherwise, in many different subjects and most of them are at prices much cheaper than in the west. If you are planning on coming to Thailand and would like to spend some time learning something, what kinds of things can you learn and where?

Thai Language – Learning Thai language is probably the most obvious thing you can learn in Thailand. In Bangkok especially, there are many language schools set up where you can learn Thai for very low fees. Last year, I took several Thai language courses at a local Thai language school. The classes met for three hours a day (9am to 12pm or 1pm to 4pm) for 20 days and the fee, including the text book, was only 5,000 baht (approximately $142). You can also take shorter classes, just a week in length, or even hire a private tutor for one-on-one Thai language lessons.

Thai Cooking – A lot of people come to Thailand to learn Thai cooking. There are hundreds of Thai cooking schools set up all over Thailand that will teach aspiring cooks how to make typical Thai menus. Prices range from $30 a course to more than $500 if you go to some of the top schools, and will teach you basic Thai dishes like som tam, tom ka gai and mango and chicken green curry.

Gemology Classes – Thailand is actually very well-known for gemology and people who are interested in learning more about diamonds and other gems often take courses in Thailand. Courses are certified and non-certified and offer anything from Diamond Grading and Pricing to Gem Identification. An Introduction to Gemology can be as low as $250 and a higher level class as high as $4,000, but these prices are still much cheaper than similar courses in the US or Europe.

Thai Massage Classes – Thailand is world-famous for Thai massage and almost everyone who comes to Thailand has, at one time or another, a Thai massage. Many people also want to learn Thai massage so there are numerous courses set up all over Thailand where you can learn. The most famous place to learn Thai massage is in Bangkok at Wat Pho and here trained masseurs will teach you all about Thai massage in as short a time as a few hours or as long as a few weeks – depending on what you want. Prices at Wat Pho are as low as $150 for a course and as high as $300, depending on what you study and for how long.

TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) Certification – A lot of would-be English teachers come to Thailand to study for a TEFL certificate, so that they can teach English in a foreign country. Thailand has many TEFL certificate courses on offer, from schools in Bangkok to schools near the beach in Phuket and Rayong. Most courses are six weeks long and include teaching practice with local area Thai schools. Average cost of a course if between $1,000 and $1,500, which is a fraction of the price of a similar TEFL course in a western country. I took my TEFL certificate course in Bangkok and highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn how to teach EFL (English as a Foreign Language).

Muay Thai (Thai Kickboxing) Classes – Of course, Thailand is the world center for Muay Thai. Since the advent of the TV series ‘The Contender Asia’, Muay Thai has become even more popular and many western men (and some women!) are now interested in learning Muay Thai. You can take a stand alone Muay Thai class, sign up for a week or two’s training, or even work with a Muay Thai gym over a period of a few months if you’re serious about starting a Muay Thai career. Courses start at a couple of hundred dollars for a basic course up to more than $1,300 for a Professional Course.

As you can see, there are many things you can study in Thailand and most of them are available much cheaper than in western countries. If you do decide to learn in Thailand though, just make sure you do a search on the internet first to check out the school you plan on attending. Most schools though are very good and, even if you don’t use whatever you’re learning for a career, you can still leave Thailand knowing more than when you got here. You can take classes in many different subjects in Thailand, and for very cheap prices!

Bangkok, The Place For Exercise?

Author: Nilda Mithell  |  Category: traveling in thailand

Bangkok, Thailand is officially the hottest city in the world. That means, exercising outside is something a lot of people don’t think about. After all, when you’ve got world-class gyms why on earth would anyone want to exercise outdoors in a city this hot? Well, it’s free. It’s also fun, it’s a lot more interesting than the gym and there are some wonderful places to go.

Lumphini Park – The most popular place in Bangkok for exercising outdoors is also the largest green area in the city. Lumphini Park is enormous (142 acres), with its own lake, public library and dance hall. Lumphini is popular with the city’s early morning and evening workout fanatics who come here in their thousands to walk or run on the running paths, cycle, rollerblade, weight lift at the outdoor gym, practice Muay Thai kickboxing, play takraw (a traditional Thai sport) or do Tai Chi. Lumphini Park also has public aerobics sessions, where you can join hundreds of men and women, all lined up and following an instructor who stands on a stage shouting encouragement into a microphone.

Best time to hit Lumphini is early morning right at dawn, when you can join the thousands of other Bangkokians before they head off to work. Or in the early evening, when people will go there to wind down after a day at work. It’s still hot, but not as unbearable as it would be in the middle of the day. You can get to Lumphini Park on the underground. Just get off at the Lumphini station.

Chatuchak Park/Queen Sirikit Park/Rot Fai Park – Right next to Mo Chit sky train station is Chatuchak Park. It’s a lovely park with a man-made lake, lots of trees and walking trails and, in the early mornings and late evenings, is busy with walkers and joggers who love to take advantage of the wide tracks. There are also public exercise groups that meet here, where everyone will get together and do aerobics or Tai Chi en masse.

Queen Sirikit Park and Rot Fai Park are also part of this three park complex so, with all three parks together, you can get a fairly long workout here. Again, the park opens early and, by 6:15am, it’s quite busy. Exercising outdoors can actually be fun and Chatuchak Park has even been reported as a place for singles to meet potential significant others.

Benjakiti Park – Near the Queen Sirikit Convention Center in downtown Bangkok, Banjakiti Park is another place that’s wonderful for outdoor exercise. Popular with office workers in the area, you’ll have lots of company here as everyone runs or walks around its man-made lake after work.

A couple of area fitness centers also run what they call “Boot Camps” in Banjakiti Park. These are month-long training sessions, where small groups meet with a trainer at the park either early mornings or late afternoons, and he/she will put you through your paces. Be warned, these sessions can be quite strenuous but some people report great results with weight loss and better fitness levels. Check out some of the fitness centers close to the park for more information.

The best way to get to Benjakiti Park is to take the sky train to Asok or the underground to Sukhumvit (both stations are at the same location), then cross Sukhumvit Road and walk about five minutes up Ratchadapisek Road. Benjakiti Park will be on your right hand side.

Thai Kickboxing

Author: Keneth Shindler  |  Category: traveling in thailand

As a practitioner of Muay Thai, I can say that this style is considered to be one of the most brutal styles of martial arts in the world. Muay Thai is one of the oldest styles in the world with at least two-thousand years of history. The reason Muay Thai is one of the most sought out martial arts styles in the world is due to its brutality and simplicity.

Muay Thai is defined as the “science of the eight limbs” with good reason. Practitioners of Muay Thai are trained to use eight limbs of the bodies: legs, knees, fists, and elbows. In a sense, Muay Thai can be considered an umbrella term. There are many different types of Muay Thai as they are many types of Kung-Fu. The most common form of Muay Thai is sport Muay Thai which uses gloves similar to that in Western Boxing. Practitioners are trained to strike with the hard bones of their bodies such as the knees and elbows. Those are some of the hardest bones in the human body. In terms of kicking, Muay Thai fighters attack with the shins instead of the feet for spin kicks and roundhouse kicks.

There are two kicks that use the shins instead of the feet: the Thai roundhouse kick and the Thai spinning sweep kick. Getting hit by a Thai roundhouse is similar to getting smacked by an aluminum bat. You can do a lot of damage to your opponent’s legs with the Thai spinning sweep kick. Both types of attacks are fairly easy to use. Thai fighters are trained to hit certain spots in the body.

Due to the nature, Muay Thai fights are extremely brutal. However, Muay Thai is the national sport of Thailand. Professional Muay Thai fighters have the same celebrity status as entertainers and sports stars in the United States. Muay Thai is considered a main livelihood which explains why many take up the path of being a Muay Thai fighter.

In short, Muay Thai is one of the ancient styles of fighting. One must be careful when training in Muay Thai and one must be careful when sparring against someone in Muay Thai. This style is one of the most sought out styles to learn in the world of mixed martial arts. Due to simplicity and brutality of Muay Thai, the style is part of almost any mixed martial arts school curriculum. Many UFC and Pride FC fighters have recognized the superior of Muay Thai over traditional styles such as Tae Kwon Do and Karate with good reason.

Muay Thai fighters are good at both long-range and close-range striking. In close quarters combat, the Muay Thai fighter has the advantage in striking and a bit of grappling. If you are not a good grappler and you get into a close range fight with a Muay Thai fighter, it will not be pretty on your end.

Overall, Muay Thai is a style with very much substance. This is one style that deserves the utmost respect. There are variations of Muay Thai. The Burmese use Lethwei which is merely Muay Thai with headbutts. There is no significant difference between the styles. In the past, Muay Thai did have headbutting attacks but were disallowed.

The Royal Thai Army uses Lerdrit which is the military form of Muay Thai. Punches are taken out and replaced with joint locks, grapples, chops, and palm strikes.

While Muay Thai is mainly used for sporting events, it should not be discounted as a possible self-defense style. In self-defense, you do not care how much damage you cause your attack. You simply hurt your attacker hard and retreat. Muay Thai can deliver that.

For this reason, Muay Thai is not only a deadly style but a superior style.

Thai Boxing Methods

Author: Ossie Widmayer  |  Category: traveling in thailand

Muay Thai gives the competitor an advantage in a fight, in and out of the ring. Let me start you of with a little of my background/ identity in relation to the sport of Muay Thai. Growing up as a kid in the Philippines in the 90’s, I was always glued to the television watching Thai boxing competitions. I liked the sport as a kid, because I thought it was more “realistic” than boxing matches. To my surprise, the competitions that allowed elbows and knees ended quick (usually in the 1st and 2nd rounds). I’ve sparred in the ring and have been in a couple of street fights in high school (in the Philippines), and I can tell you from experience that the most brutal techniques always have an element of muay thai into it. Without further ado, LETS GET TO THE GOOD STUFF!!! (The techniques).

The first technique is the fakes, or feint attacks. This is very useful in the ring and deadly in the streets. In the ring, you don’t have to hit your opponent first to make him react to a feint attack. In street fighting however, you must hit him first. Hit him hard and fast, and if he survived your first attack, your second attack could be a feint followed by a counter. Examples of this would be (from a right stance) feint a left cross and throw a right hook to the body, then clinch and follow with a right knee. Throw a left round house kick, then feint the second round house kick twist your body counter clockwise to load up your left hand, jump up with your right foot and execute a super man punch. Feint a right foot jab and throw a left super man punch. Feint a right hook to the head and do an uppercut. Feint a body shot and do a head shot (either hand). Feint a high kick and do a low leg kick (either leg). The possibilities are endless!

The second technique is the draw in. In a draw in, you make your opponent believe that you forgot all about your defenses and put one of your hands down to chest level or open up your guard. But make sure you are at a right distance relative to his weapons when you’re doing this. You could do this by: Dropping your lead hand and timing your cross before he lands either a jab or a cross (when you do this, make sure you slip to the outside of his jab and to the inside of his cross), dropping your rear hand and timing a lead hook to his temple/jaw, leaning backward and executing timing a front/ rear foot jab (depending on distance), and again the possibilities are endless.

The third one is the clinch-push-attack technique. What is the clinch-push-attack technique? The clinch-push-attack technique is used when your opponent is to strong for your clinch game. At the moment he gets away from your clinch, push him away with either hand (only one hand please) and execute an attack relative to distance. If he is too close, throw a right/ left elbow. If he is too far, load up with the muay thai round kick to the thigh, body, or head. Hint: While he is off balance when he first gets away and is leaning forward, throw a round kick to the head. If he is leaning back throw one on the thigh. If he’s hands are flailing to get his balance, throw a round kick to the body.

This article is in its infancy and I will be posting more techniques as soon as I get back from training. Remember: I only post techniques that work for at least 15-20 different people. If a technique does not work, don’t throw it away like a scratch paper, vary your timing, distance, and positioning to make it work. And most importantly, do what works for you, but set it up to where the opponent does not know its coming.

Working Out The Thai Way…

Author: Milan Postma  |  Category: traveling in thailand

Muay Thai, literally Thai Boxing and also known as The Art of the Eight Limbs is a form of hard martial art practiced in several Southeast Asian countries including Thailand. Muay Thai has a long history in Thailand and is the country’s national sport.

Traditional Muay Thai practised today varies significantly from the ancient art Muay Boran and uses kicks and punches in a ring with gloves similar to those used in Western boxing, training is specialised for fighting in the ring under rules prior to fights, however many gyms still practise techniques illegal in the ring.

This shows the relationship between muay thai as a martial art and muay thai as a sport. Muay Thai is referred to as “The Science of Eight Limbs”, as the hands, shins, elbows, and knees are all used extensively in this art. A practitioner of Muay Thai (”nak muay”) thus has the ability to execute strikes using eight “points of contact,” as opposed to “two points” (fists) in Western boxing and “four points” (fists, feet) used in the primarily sport-oriented forms of martial arts. Historically, Thais have used Muay Thai to both protect themselves and to fight in war.

Using muay thai as a workout is a great way to get your body into shape and lose some weight. Muay Thai is a very intense workout and allows you to burn a lot of calories. This workout is good for anyone since you can start slow and work your way up as you get into better shape.

A typical Muay Thai workout usually includes a warm-up, resistance training, a base workout, and a cool down. Beginners can start with smaller resistance training and easier base workouts. The base workout usually consists of shadow boxing, pad strikes, and maybe even some sparring.

Muay Thai King

Author: Eli Pero  |  Category: traveling in thailand

DeCoda “Little Cat” King an amazing 8 year old boy that is into Muay Thai. He trains at Samingdum Muay Thai in Tulsa, Oklahoma. DeCoda has never been in any sport in his life until he came across Muay Thai in “2006″ at age 5.

His first fight was in Oklahoma City and he lost by decision in “2006″. Now, DeCoda did not give up there he went and fought again in Tulsa in “2007″ and won that one. Boy, this kid can fight. He fought several times that year and only lost one more fight. Than in “2008″ he got invited to attend the Armature World Championships in Iowa. Now, by this time his record was 4 wins, 2 losses, 0 draws and 1 KO.

When DeCoda entered in the championships in Iowa he was the only 7 year old boy that entered. Not to mention that this was his first time ever to attend something like this. When DeCoda shows up for weigh ins they tell him he has to weigh in at 55lbs or he could not fight. Well, DeCoda steps up to weigh in and he weighs in with his shoes, clothes, change in his pockets, the whole works and weighs right at 55lbs.

So he gets all ready to warm up for his first fight of the day. He gets to the ring and finds out that the kid that he was going to have to fight was 9 years old, weighing about 65lbs and was taller than him. Well, DeCoda he gets out there and fights his heart out and wins by decision.

Now, he makes it to the finals the next day. He come in and is ready to fight and come home with a World Title belt. He is walking up to the ring to fight his last fight for his belt. He meets his opponent and finds out that this kid is also 9 years old and is weighing about 72lbs.

They start to fight, DeCoda is in the ring doing his thing and winning the fight. The bell rings they go back to their corners. Then they get back out there and start fighting their second round. The kid keeps taking DeCoda down and DeCoda is getting mad. Than the bell rings again for them to go back to their corners again. Now, it is the final round of the fight. They get back out there and fight their last round. DeCoda is still mad cause the kid keeps taking him down still, and DeCoda get up all slow and mad.

Well, it is time to announce the winner. It comes out that DeCoda “Little Cat” King lost by decision all because he got mad over the kid taking him down and was getting up too slow. But he did come home in second place in the championships that year. Not to mention that he was the only 7 year old kid that entered the championships, and he said “that is okay cause I will be back next year and I will get that belt”.

Review: Fitne Tea – the Thai Way to Lose Weight Fast

Author: Normand Bachmeier  |  Category: traveling in thailand

I recently bought some Fitne Green Tea in Bangkok. It’s very popular in Thailand as a diet or weight loss drink, and is primarily used by Thai Muay Thai kickboxers who are trying to drop some weight and Thai women who are trying to do the same. The tea supposedly contains a natural herbal ingredient that makes you lose weight. It’s also advertised that regular consumption promotes a slimmer healthier figure and a better functioning digestive system. In reality though, it’s nothing more than an herbal laxative. So how does it taste and is it healthy?

I bought the Herbal Infusion Green Tea Flavored variety on Sunday afternoon and I drank two cups in the evening before going to bed. On Monday and Tuesday, I didn’t feel any different nor did my bathroom habits seem to be more unusual than normal. I continued drinking it throughout the day, drinking five cups of tea by late evening. That night, I spent a little more time in the bathroom than normal as not only was I urinating a little more, but my bowel movements were more frequent than normal too.

On Wednesday and Thursday I drank at least 4 cups both days. By Wednesday evening though, I noticed I was getting a slight stomach ache so I cut back on Thursday to 2 cups. On Thursday, my stomach was hurting a little but I was definitely feeling lighter and less weighed down. My skin was also starting to look clearer and slightly glowing. I also noticed I had a lot more energy than was normal, especially around 4pm when I would usually feel tired.

I’ve continued to drink the tea for the last two days, so I have now been drinking it for almost a week. I still feel lighter and, although I haven’t weighed myself, I can tell by the way my clothing is fitting I have probably lost four or five pounds. Yet I’ve been eating the same amount of food I usually eat. I plan on continuing drinking three to four cups of tea for the next few days and then will slowly cut down till I’m only drinking one cup a day. After two weeks, I will stop using it every day and drink only a couple of times a week, as I have heard from several Thai friends it’s not healthy to drink for long periods of time.

As far as taste goes, it tastes like green tea but a bitterer version of the green tea I drink. The back of the bag says that each 2.65 gramme tea bag contains 1500mg of Senna leaves, 500 mg of Senna pods, green tea leaves, and 150 mg of Garcinia Atroviridis. Garcinia Atroviridis is a hydroxy citric acid, which is a natural substance that is extracted from the rind of the fruit of the Garcinia Cambogia tree. It is apparently non-toxic and has been used for generations for appetite suppressing and weight loss. However, diabetics should never drink anything with this substance in it as it has a very bad glycemic reaction on the body. So Fitne tea is definitely out for somebody who has diabetes.

Overall, I think I was quite successful in my goal of losing some weight with Fitne. A five pound weight loss is good for only a week and, as the taste is not too bad, it didn’t really seem such a chore to be drinking it. I just substituted a few cups of this tea every day instead of the coffee I drank before.

As far as I know, it is a product that is mainly available in Thailand. Many Thai sellers sell it on eBay and ecrater though, so if you’re interested in trying some it shouldn’t be too difficult to get. Just remember to start out slowly and see how you feel before you decide to drink more than one cup a day, and also stop drinking it if you suddenly feel dizzy or light-headed as this could mean it’s causing your body to have a nasty glycemic reaction.
