My girlfriend and I are planning to take a trip to Thailand. Few Questions?

bounce_00 asked:
Can you suggest any cheap but modest enough hotel? And how much.
How does food, drinks or a taxi cost for few kilometers ride?
How do we go to ChangMai from Bangkok? Any places to visit? Any package in Thailand that offer something less?
We wanted to go on our own because tour packages are limited. Thanks in advance!

Taxi charge starts at 35 baht for the first 2 km.
Hotel … where???
Go from Bangkok to Chiang Mai by night train, on second class sleeper with fan.
Food … at basic local restaurant (cheap cheap, USD 1 per meal) or at fancy five star restaurant ??

In Bkk Khao San road has many inexpensive backpacker hotels – - to go to Chiang Mai I would go to Mochit Bus terminal – the VIP busses going north are quite nice and reasonable – Cherd Chai is good.. In CM you will find many travel agents with inexpensive tours and day trps and many guesthouses in the $10 range – - food is very reasonable everywhere… street food is good and cheap.. Travel is safe and easy, Thai people are helpful – you do not need a tour..

In Bangkok and Chiang Mai, there are many reasonable hotels, check with a travel agency online, ———————————if you really want to save money, you might stay at a guest house.
To get to Chiang Mai you could go on an overnight bus or take the train which has sleeper cars and is quite inexpensive compared to the US.
check the money rates before you go, its about 34 baht to the dollar.
In Bangkok be sure to take a taxi with a meter in it, you can also take a tuk-tuk which is kind of like a golf cart with three wheels and a manical driver LOL. they are very cheap and they do expect you to bargin,Usually only a dollar or two—- If you are good a bargining then you will do wel ll in any of the markets there. Chaing Mai has a great night market. Food is pretty reasonable except in upscale places, Food off the carts on the street, its cheap cheap cheap and good but usually very spicy ( pet)
There are also fast food American style, McDonalds, Burger King, Pizza huts, sizzlers etc. The food there is cheaper then in the US but more expensive then on the street.

we went to bangkok in early oct. and stayed at trinity hotel in silom area. there’s a new hotel called “i residence” which is a block from trinity hotel which has the same rates as trinity hotel. check out hoteltravel.com. we book the flight & hotel ourselves instead of doing tours, it’s cheaper that way.
taxi fares depend on where you go. to silom area, 500 baht for sedan type and 700 baht for suv which includes tolls, however, meter doesn’t apply. we went w/this price because we just wanted to get to the hotel, but after you’re settled and ready to go about, make sure the taxi driver turns on the meter. tips are not obligated but are appreciated.
silom area is convenient – close to bts train station, siam paragon, mbk hall, patpong (night club area), night bazaar, central world, panthip, big c, and not far from chatuchak market (flea market). there’re shopping everywhere. of course, street foods are everywhere as well. malls food court accept coupons but some food vendors accept cash.
besides the places i mentioned, there’s a floating market called damnuan saduak. it’s about 2 hrs from bangkok. check out the fresh fruits and vegetables market…there’s nothing like you’ve seen.
shirts are one size fits all and you can’t try them on because there are no fitting rooms. you can pretty much bargain on everything. there is a fee to use the bathroom ranges from 1-3 baht. 99.9% of the time, bathroom tissues/paper towel are not provided, make sure you carry some w/you.
the easiest way to get to the grand palace, the emerald temple and wat pho (reclining buddha) is by boat. there are tour boats which costs 100 bath per/person, and 25 bath for public boats. both of which take you to the same pier, so don’t be fooled.
it’s better to fly from bangkok to chiangmai. check out thai airways airline. they offer something like $169 for 3 cities.
that’s all i could think of, enjoy your trip!

Hi, for hotels look at these sites:
They usually have the better rates around. Pick the ones in your budget range anywhere in Thailand.
Food and drinks are quite cheap in Thailand, if you eat local, it can cost you only 100bahts a meal each, with drink. If you want to eat up-market, maybe 500baht for 2, drinks extra. Anyway, a bottle drink cost about 25baht, so it is not pricey.
Cabs are great to travel around. And always go by the meter. It will be cheaper. Example from airport to city centre is about 300bahts plus tolls and service charge. So take those cabs that use meters. The most from end to end in the city is about 100-150baht. Again, traffic is usually heavy so you might want to consider using the Skytrain and the underground line for travel as much as you can.
Traveling to Chiangmai, you have 3 options, the cheapest is by inter-province bus but will take almost 14 hours. Train is another option with about 12 hours travel. By plane, it is a 45 minutes flight. Cost wise, it will depend on season and cost up to 2000baht a a single trip.
You can get tour packages for Bangkok from the many tour agencies in the city. You can mix and match any of them base on your time. You can even make arrangement for Chiangmai with them if you are not sure how to do it yourself. Talk to one, I am sure they will be glad to help you out.
You can email me if you want any other info.

In Chiang Mai stay at The downtown Inn. Tuk tuks are cheaper then taxis you can go across Chiang Mai for 100B, set price before you leave. If going on taxi make sure the use the meter. Bangkok stay at Indra Regent Hotel. Tuk tuks in Bangkok will take you to tailors or jewellers where the prices are high. In Bangkok use the sky train – cheap and efficient. Food cheap. drinks very cheap – beer 20B a can. Fly from Chiang mai to Bangkok with Thai airways. Bargain hard at markets. There are the same products at lots of stores so offer a low price if the store owner lets you walk away you know you offer more at the next store. Tours can be arranged over there at road side stores for cheap.
