I have lived in Thailand for the past 25 years. I am retired from Canada. There is NO problem with what you want to do. The red-shirts will be finished in a week or so. Enjoy!

It’s been safe for me so I don’t know why it wouldn’t be safe for you or anyone else. I live outside of Bangkok, but travel to the city often. I spent two nights in Bangkok this week and only time I seen the Red Shirts were while traveling by waving flags on motorcycles or in pickups. Since you plan to retire here you are here for the long run and these protest aren’t going to go on forever. The only problem now could be traffic delays and some time long ones, so keep up with the news, get an news sms service after you get here and try to avoid areas where the protesters are planning to be.

Most of the demonstrations are in Bangkok. And if you don’t join the maddening crowd, then there is nothing for you to worry. If you want to retire and have a quiet, with full modern facilities, then come to places like Chiang Mai, You can get an apartment for a little more than US$100.00 for a month, drink a big bottle of beer for less than One US dollar. have a big lunch or dinner for about US$5.00 a meal. We many retirees living here and they are enjoying their stay. Come and join them and enjoy your retirement.

I’ve been living in Thailand for almost 2 years now. I’m not a retiree though. I work in Sukhumvit area where the red shirts parade. There’s really nothing violent about it. Thailand is by far the safest place in the world for a foreigner (farang) to either live, work or retire.
