Info on retirement in Thailand? I am on a fixed income and looking for more bang for my buck?
T.J. asked:
Could I live in Thailand with out it effecting my U.S. citizenship? What is the current exchange rate between U.S. currency and that of Thailand. Can a U.S. citizen own property in Thailand? How safe is for a 65 yr. male retiree to live in Thailand? Are there certin areas where U.S. and other forign nationals seem to congregate?

I am a US Citizen living in Thailand – at last count I have heard there are 40,000 of us here. You keep your passport and you get a retirement visa which enables you to stay here. It is very very safe – and there are places such as Pattaya, the beach resort, where there seem to be more foreigners than Thai and the Thai there will speak English. As to the exchange rate, the $$ is weak all over the world but you still get so much more for your money than in the US – that you can have a standard of living that you never imagined.. You can own a condo but in most places rents are cheap and you don’t really need to own – I would not recommend this until you have lived somewhere for a while and decide that you want to stay.. but if you want to own, it is easily done.. The hospitals and medical care is first rate – they have hospitals in Bkk that are better than any I have seen in the USA [they could be mistaken for a Hilton Hotel].. I have never had to wait more than an hour for anything – including results of bloodwork which can take 4-7 days in the USA.. Well, there are too many reasons to list as to why this is a great retirement place. If you need more info feel free to contact me.. Yes, I am retired here too..

The US dollar is pegged to the Thai baht, so both should move together. A foreigner cannot legally own land (ie. a house), but there are ways round it. A foreigner can 100% legally own a condo though, as long as the entire population of the block does not exceed 49% foreign ownership. One day i hope i can retire there, its the best decision you will ever make. Just dont get ripped off and buy a Condo from a man in a bar. Enjoy.
