If you set up a business here, you will be eligible for a business visa and likely, a real pain in the butt.
Do you own and operate a business in your own country? – Even if you do, unless you are highly familiar with the way things work here, you are likely looking at big problems. Enjoy your vacations, it is much more fun than dealing with problems that you cannot even imagine.

First things first – you have to meet all the Thai Visa conditions so the first thing you do is go to Thai Consulate web site in your country and read all about the visa rules.
Depends on your budget and where you want to do business.
Some people buy bar’s, some people do bed and breakfast others export good’s but do not expect to make a fortune unless you are very good businessman.
You must have some sort of Idea of what you want to do.
It is very important that you have a Thai friend to go through all paper work and procedures to help you.
Good Luck
It’s so much easier if you are 50 + , have at least 5 Million Baht in the Bank and married to Thai.

If you are married to a Thai it is a lot easier to just put it in her name. If you are not married to a Thai and know very little about the legal way to start a business it might be better to consult with a lawyer or agency like Sunbelt Asia;

First of all you need to realise that there are a number of restrictions in place for foreigners owning a business in Thailand, for example if you want to work in your own business legitimately you will require a work permit.
Secondly, you can only own 49% of the establishment as a foreigner and if you cannot speak/read Thai, then you will require a Thai representative who you can trust and rely on.
It is much easier to put the business in your Thai wife’s name and work behind the scenes. Also, don’t invest what you can’t afford to lose – many foreigners have brought a business in Thailand and have pretty much lost everything, don’t be one of these!
