Hephasto M asked:

I have a job opportunity (teaching MCAT Biology 6 hours a week) in Thailand in which they will pay my air fare and housing and I can earn 150,000 in Thai money for the year. However, this is only a few thousand in U.S. dollars. I’m wondering if this is enough for me to get by on foodwise and have enough to party a little bit.

P.S. The job is a plan B if I don’t get in to med school on my first go around.

The pay alone is not that great to survive on. But if you teach English on the side, and help studies doing their thesis you could make it. However this will not pay for your med school

No that’s really bad money even for Thailand.Your talking 12500 baht a month.I make 40,000 baht a month a sometimes am a little short a few days before payday if I indulge too much. You will only be able to eat Thai food and never go do anything.

You’re getting ripped at that rate. That’s about equal to the national per capita income which is pretty low. Many English teachers with minimal qualifications make 30,000 baht per month or more. And by the way, you won’t be able to get a work permit with that wage because it is way below the legal minimum wage for U.S. citizens in Thailand.

Yo Phasto – - not much, but not much time commitment either – - supplements required. Sure.

Sir, I say aberage Bangkoker income is 20000?/month and Outer less than 10000?/month. Do your math.

A bowl of noodle costs you 40 – 70? in Bangkok. The same thing costs you 25-440? outside tourist area. You might eat that thing 3 – 4 times a day. Now you get a picture.

I live in Ratchaburi. It costs me 6000?/month (I cook my own meals) and I earn enough not to worry. Anyway, for a Farang, 150,000 / year is quite too low. Seriously.
