Best Mitts For Muay Thai

Author: Elwood Mantel  |  Category: traveling in thailand

Muay Thai gloves are at the top of the list, aside from the proper apparel, when it comes to successfully and safely practicing the sport. As we all know, this hand gear protects the player’s fingers, knuckles and wrists form being hurt or bruised. Damage and injuries can be reduced if you wear a good pair of Muay Thai gloves.

Muay Thai is Thailand’s version of a powerful martial art and is also considered as their national sport. It differs from its predecessor the Muay Boran because of the use of gloves. It resembles other kickboxing sports from nearby countries such as the Lethwei from Myanmar, Tomoi from Malaysia, Pradal Serey from Cambodia and Muay Lao from Laos.

Muay Thai gloves are usually made out of polystyrene or leather and of course layered foam is sewn inside. Popular categories of gloves used by amateur and professional fighters include the training or sparring gloves, gloves that are used to hit focus mitts and heavy bags and lastly, the competition gloves.

So what are the factors that you need to consider in deciding what Muay Thai gloves are the right ones for you? How can you choose the ideal Muay Thai gloves?

If you want to have career in this type of martial arts, the first thing to do is ask your trainer to pick which Muay Thai gloves will suit you best. But if you are left alone in deciding which pair to choose, you have to assess the type of activity that you will be engaging in.

To jumpstart your career in Muay Thai, you first have to undergo training and sparring sessions. Muay Thai gloves that are ideal for such activities are usually heavier, this way your strength is increased. A softer padding is needed for maximum protection.

To further enhance your speed, agility and skills, hitting heavy bags and focus mitts should be a part of your training regimen. The type of Muay Thai gloves apt for these activities is bag gloves. A thick padding at the front portion is required.

If you are already set for competition, the perfect Muay Thai gloves would be one that is light so you can punch easily. A flexible pair of gloves is also required so you can freely grab your opponent.

Gloves that are made of leather might be a bit pricey but you are ensured that they are durable enough to withstand several fights. Vinyl gloves are the next best alternative if you are on a budget.

As you can see, the task of choosing a good pair of Muay Thai gloves is important so you are assured that you can play or fight properly. Hopefully these tips will help you make an informed decision and guide you towards picking the perfect pair of Muay Thai gloves.

Awesome Kickboxing Workout Routines (DVD’s)

Author: Leoma Sur  |  Category: traveling in thailand

The benefits of exercise are widely publicized, and for good reason. A regular fitness routine is great for your mind and your body.

In fact, maintaining a regular fitness regimen improves all areas of your life. Exercise offers a happier attitude, stronger heart and lungs, a better sex-life, increased self-confidence, a more restful night’s sleep, reduced risk of chronic disease and better weight management. Sign me up.

Exercise DVDs are great for those of us who are convinced of the benefits of regular fitness activity but still cannot manage to find time to get to the gym. I got hooked on exercise DVDs when my schedule became so hectic that regular fitness activity dropped a few notches on my priority scale. Looking for a way to workout in a hurry without spending the time or money to join a gym and not wanting to purchase costly home fitness equipment, exercise DVDs made sense. The extra bonus exercise DVDs provide is their mobility. Pack your favorite fitness DVDs for a convenient way to maintain your exercise routine while traveling.

Kickboxing is an efficient way to exercise. Kickboxing is the quickest workout for overall cardiovascular conditioning while increasing your strength, flexibility and balance at the same time. Modern kickboxing is a fusion of martial arts, boxing and aerobics. The right kickboxing DVD combines these elements with upbeat music to offer total physical conditioning. And exercising with DVDs allows you to start at a level that suits you and gradually progress. In the comforts of your home, you can exercise at the time and pace of your choice. So get ready. Here are my top 5 kickboxing DVD recommendations (in no particular order).

Kickboxing Workout DVD Recommendation #1 10 Minute Solution – Kickbox Boot Camp (2005) Instructor: Keli Roberts List Price: $15.00

The 10 Minute Solution exercise DVDs are straight forward and well organized. In the Kickbox Boot Camp DVD, the exercises are presented, as you might have guessed, in 10 minute increments; each segment focusing on a specific body part. This particular fitness DVD offers 5 boot camp-style kickboxing workouts. Progressively increasing in intensity, the first 10 minute exercise segment – Basic Training – is a ‘must’ for kickboxing novices. In the Basic Training section, Keli Roberts teaches fundamental kickboxing moves for a total-body workout. This introductory segment lays the foundation for the next 4 installments but also delivers a decent stand alone beginner’s workout. The concept of the 10 Minute Solution exercise DVDs appeals to me because I can tailor-build an individual program to meet my daily fitness goals.

The 5 segments offered on the 10 Minute Solution – Kickbox Boot Camp DVD includes Basic Training, Ultimate Buns and Thighs, Arm and Shoulder Sculptor which incorporates light hand-weights into the punching routine, Washboard Abs and an intense Fat Burning Blast. Many of Keli’s moves are unique and this exercise DVD keeps you moving. Her no-nonsense approach is appealing and her combinations are well explained and easy to follow. If done straight through, you have 50 minutes of solid total body conditioning exercises.

Kickboxing Workout DVD Recommendation #2 Quick Fix: Total Cardio Kick (2004) Instructor: Janis Saffell List Price: $10.00

The Quick Fix exercise DVDs, as with the 10 Minute Solution exercise DVDs, are divided into 10 minute segments. Targeting a particular body part in 10 minute increments offers the freedom to organize your workouts with a specific focus. For example, if you choose Monday for upper-body exercises, select several 10 minute routines from a variety of workout DVDs for arms, shoulders and chest. Personally design a thorough upper-body program with the use of multiple 10 minute exercise DVDs. On an alternate day, do the same for lower-body. The flexibility and personalization will keep you motivated. For this reason, I recommend the 10 minute kickboxing DVDs.

No kickboxing workout DVD list would be complete without a Janis Saffell recommendation. Specializing in kickboxing, Janis has a familiar old-school style of instruction that includes excellent cueing. Janis gets into the exercises quickly and has your heart pumping from the beginning. Quick Fix: Total Cardio Kick offers 3-10 minute segments, the first workout focusing on upper body conditioning with a variety of cardio boxing punches. The second 10 minute installment concentrates on cardio and lower body moves with the use of traditional Martial Arts kicks focused on legs and lower back. And the final workout targets the core at a fast and effective pace. An all-around well done workout DVD.

Kickboxing Workout DVD Recommendation #3 Kickbox Underground (2005) Instructor: Guillermo Gomez List Price: $8.00

Kickbox Underground is a favorite exercise DVD for several reasons. Guillermo Gomez is a black belt martial arts expert who infuses the workout with a calm and focused attitude. A charming and engaging instructor, Guillermo starts slowly and gradually builds up the intensity in this workout. This DVD is promoted as an intermediate fitness level workout but it moves slowly in places. Because I like Guillermo’s style, I’ve increased the workout intensity by adding weight gloves, which makes a huge difference. The workout seamlessly combines basic kickboxing steps with moves to help sharpen focus, awareness and balance. The production is a bit weak but the great Techno music makes up for it. Easy to follow, this 40 minute fitness routine starts with upper body work and progresses to the more advanced martial-arts style kicking moves. The routine ends with an especially calming cool down. Overall, Kickbox Underground is a solid kickboxing workout DVD.

Kickboxing Workout DVD Recommendations #4 & #5 Tae Bo Cardio (2003) Ultimate Tae Bo (2007) Instructor: Billy Blanks List Price: $13.00 each

It’s best to review these Tae Bo exercise DVDs in combination because a similar theme runs through all the Billy Blanks fitness DVDs. I stayed away from Tae Bo for a long time, figuring it was an overexposed fad. But as my affinity for kickboxing grew, I decided to give Billy a chance. Well, Billy Blanks is a seven-time World Martial Arts Champion and it’s easy to understand why. There is a decidedly upbeat and positive message woven throughout Tae Bo Cardio and Ultimate Tae Bo (as well as the entire Tae Bo DVD series). Extremely motivational, Billy Blanks has an honest and engaging manner that inspires you to perform these kickboxing moves with gusto. Seriously challenging exercises, Tae Bo incorporates martial arts style kickboxing fundamentals with faith-based messages of uplifting encouragement. The guy makes you believe you can do it all.

Tae Bo Cardio may not be on a ‘hard-body’ fitness enthusiast’s kickboxing DVD list but I’ve included it because of the instructional nature of the workout. This Tae Bo DVD provides a foundation for kickboxing fundamentals and a good basic introduction to Tae Bo. With great attention to form, the workout begins with a proper warm-up and gradually builds in intensity. The transitions are a bit sloppy and the repetitions are not equal per side so be warned if this type of thing bothers you. The 40 minute program is easy for Tae Bo beginners to follow and delivers a beginner or intermediate level workout, depending on how hard you push yourself.

The Ultimate Tae Bo DVD lives up to its title. It’s a 90 minute high-energy, exhausting program of traditional Tae Bo moves designed for a total body workout. The exercises are geared towards sculpting your body, strengthening your core and burning fat. This fitness DVD is for the more advanced exerciser. The music is good and keeps you motivated, aside from the comical dance moves at the end. Billy’s cues are easy to follow but you will come up to speed quicker if you already know basic Tae Bo moves. Even with a built-in stopping place at 1 hour, Ultimate Tae Bo is a long workout. If you stick with it, however, you will see results quickly.

In summary, there are many kickboxing exercise DVDs on the market today and workout DVDs have evolved tremendously. Far different from video workouts of the past, the trend of Martial arts based kicks and punches combined with fat-blasting cardio makes exercising with DVDs more fun and challenging. Kickboxing is a rigorous workout and a great way to reduce stress; kickboxing exercises help improve balance, sharpen reflexes, increase flexibility, coordination, and endurance. Don’t we all need that? Give the kickboxing exercise DVDs a try and see which ones appeal to you personally. The five I listed are available at amazon.com. Have fun.

Wanna Know About an Awesome Thai Boxing Camp?

Author: Cyril Flanner  |  Category: traveling in thailand

If you are interested in training Muay Thai, you need to get yourself over to Bangkok Boxing in Chamblee. What makes this gym better than the other gyms that have Muay Thai and kickboxing classes?

Well, for starters, it’s run by Surapon “Khunpon” Dekchampu. With over 300 fights on his resume, you won’t find anyone in the city with comparable experience. He’s competed and won in Bangkok, Thailand’s prestigious Lumpinee Stadium. He’s been fighting since he was 9 years old. You simply won’t find anyone in the area whose expertise compares to his. His right-hand man and assistant instructor is Chike Lindsay-Ajudua, a 25 year old prodigy who already has an impressive number of title belts in his wardrobe.

If you want to learn how to fight, you could go to one of the other gyms in town and learn “stand-up” fighting from someone who has probably had a few amateur fights. Or you can go to Bangkok Boxing and learn the real deal from a coach who was born and raised in Thailand. You’ll get the best coaching and conditioning available, and the family of fighters at Bangkok Boxing is a close knit, supportive group of athletes with great attitudes.

Not sure if you want to compete? No problem. If you want to get fit or just learn Muay Thai for fun, this gym will be great for you. There are beginning Muay Thai classes, and there are fitness kickboxing classes too. And if you think Khunpon’s and Chike’s kickboxing classes are like what you’ve seen at your local generic fitness gym, you’re in for a major surprise. Being drilled by two professional athletes in the prime of physical condition is a whole lot different than taking a class from a perky fitness instructor in a pink tank top.

You’ll work like you’ve never worked before. Then you’ll work more than that. And at the end of class, you’ll be surprised at how much you accomplished.

Yodsaenklai and Naruepol – Muay Thai

Author: Deonna Goody  |  Category: traveling in thailand

On the ninth episode of The Contender Asia, the Muay Thai boxing competition, we just witnessed the most surprising fight. The two favorites, Thai fighters Naruepol and Yodsaenklai, were forced to fight against each other. This fight was expected to be the fight that would happen in the final round. Instead, the two fighters from Thailand were forced to fight each other on episode nine, and Yodsaenklai came out the winner.

Normally, on The Contender Asia, the other Muay Thai fighters choose which fighters will fight. The rules changed however when the competition got down to the final eight fighters. This time, each fighter had to choose a drawer to open in a Chinese cabinet. If the drawer contained a statue of Buddha, then that fighter would fight. The two Thai fighters ended up choosing drawers last and, as none of the other fighters had opened drawers containing Buddhas, the two Thai fighters were the next fighters to fight. This was a huge shock for the Thai fighters as they not only are from the same Muay Thai gym in Thailand, but they are also best friends. Muay Thai fighters never want to fight their friends.

Once the fight was announced though, it was quite obvious who was going to win. Yodsaenklai, the current World Muay Thai Junior Middleweight Champion (154lb division) and the winner of the prestigious Lumpinee Stadium title in Thailand, was sad to fight his friend but knew he had no choice. He said that, if he had to, he would. Naruepol, on the other hand, from the minute he found out seemed agitated and worried and unable to concentrate. So, when the fight arrived, he didn’t use his “weapons” strongly and Yodsaenklai won. When Naruepol left the training facility, one thing he said was so typical Thai. He said that he and Yodsaenklai “would always be friends and that good friends are hard to find, because you can’t buy them. On the other hand, as long as you are still alive you can always earn money. ”

Naruepol may still end up in The Contender Asia final fight on April 12th if enough people vote for him to be given a second chance. If you think Naruepol deserves to fight against the winner of the other seven guys, you can check the AXN website and get the number for your country to SMS your vote.

Thailand still has the world’s best Muay Thai fighters. Wouldn’t it be great if two of them were in The Contender Asia finale?

Traditional Muay Thai Fights

Author: Hong Kraasch  |  Category: traveling in thailand

When I first came to Thailand, I went to see a live Muay Thai (Thai boxing) match and, during the match, my Thai boyfriend told me a Kung Fu fighter had never beaten a Muay Thai kickboxer. I don’t know if this is true, but what it did tell me was Thais are very proud of their national sport. Muay Thai is also known as Thai kickboxing and has become very popular with westerners as well as Thais, both to watch Muay Thai and to learn to do it. Many tourists who come to Bangkok want to watch a live Muay Thai match but are not always sure where to go. Muay Thai can be seen in many places in Bangkok, but these Muay Thai (Thai boxing) venues are the main ones.

Lumpini Stadium (known in Thai as Sanam Muay Lumpini) – This seems to be the main Muay Thai (Thai kickboxing) stadium in Bangkok. Lumpini Muay Thai Stadium is also where I went to see my first Thai kickboxing matches. It’s only open on Tuesday and Friday evenings (6:30-11pm) and Saturday afternoons and evenings (4:30-8pm and 8pm to 12pm) with around eight matches each night, plus a main match. When I was there, the main Muay Thai match was between a Thai guy and a farang (westerner), who was from Holland. Surprisingly, even though my Thai boyfriend thought otherwise, the farang Muay Thai kickboxer easily won the match.

Lumpini Stadium is very crowded, so expect a lot of noise, but it’s a really fun night out. Be warned though, where Thais pay ‘Thai price’ of only a couple of hundred baht (about $4 per ticket), westerners pay a lot more. When I went the price for an average ticket for a westerner was more than $20 and I’ve heard it’s gone up since. Plus, if you want to sit ringside, which a lot of westerners do, it’s even more expensive. For me, I prefer to sit among the Thais on the ‘normal seats’ as you really feel like you’re part of the event, and not segregated in a roped-off area up at the front. Games are also televised on Thai TV, so you can watch in your hotel room or at many Bangkok bars.

Lumpini Stadium is on Rama IV Road in Bangkok and you can call them at 02-251-4303 for more information, although expect to have some problems as anyone who answers the phone is likely to have limited English skills.

Ratchadamnoen Stadium (known in Thai as Sanam Muay Ratchadamnoen) – This is the more expensive Bangkok Thai kickboxing venue with tickets starting at 1,000 baht (around $28) and going up to 2,000 (around $65), which is incredibly expensive in Thailand. Ratchadamnoen Stadium has the usual Muay Thai matches (around eight every night they’re open) with opening days the opposite of Lumpini Stadium, so you can see a Thai boxing match every night.

Ratchadamnoen Stadium is open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6:30pm to 11pm and on Sundays from 4pm until 12am. Most of the matches are also televised on Thai TV, so if you don’t want to spend the money, you can also head out to one of many bars in Bangkok that will be showing the match on TV. Ratchadamnoen Stadium is on Ratchadamnoen Avenue (also spelled Rajadamnoen) near the offices of the Thai Tourism Authority. Call them at 02-281-4205.

Local Temples and Fairs – Some of the local temples and fairs will also occasionally have Muay Thai kickboxing matches. Ask your hotel reception desk, if you’re staying at a hotel, as there will be lots of local places you can watch a Muay Thai match, that will be a nominal entrance fee or free.

Lumpini Park – You can also go to Lumpini Park during the daytime, where there are often Muay Thai fighters practicing or having sparring matches with friends. They’re more than happy to let you watch them, although most won’t speak enough English for you to have a conversation.

While in Bangkok you’ll find there are tons of Muay Thai venues from the big stadiums like Lumpini and Ratchadamnoen to smaller ones, local temples and fairs. Just remember, when you get there, ignore the touts who sell tickets for a much higher price than normal entrance fee, and buy a ticket at the ticket office. Expect to pay ‘farang price’ (higher price for westerners) though as only Thais get ‘Thai price’.

Losing Weight In Thailand – Where To Go

Author: Augustine Fabrizio  |  Category: traveling in thailand

For both Thais and westerners, gaining weight in Bangkok, Thailand is pretty easy to do. With food everywhere and at dirt cheap prices, you’ve packed on 20 lbs before you even notice it. Take heart though, it’s not as serious as it seems. Bangkok has plenty of great places where you can go to lose weight and, before you know it, you’ll be back to your usual thin self.

Fitness Centers/Gyms – In the last few years, many fitness centers and gyms have opened in Bangkok. True Fitness, Fitness First, California Wow, Clark Hatch and more – they all offer fully-equipped gyms, classes like yoga, aerobics, dance and pilates, stream rooms and the like. At any gym in Bangkok, you can usually sign up for a month’s membership to test it and see if you like it. Be warned though, some gyms like California Wow have a bad reputation for overly aggressive marketing strategies, so be careful what you sign up for and what you end up paying.

Other than aggressive sales tactics though, Bangkok fitness centers and gyms can be a great place to lose weight. You can even hire a personal trainer for a few sessions, so you can learn ways to lose weight quicker.

Lumphini Park – Lumphini Park is a wonderful place to go to lose weight. It’s the city’s largest green area at 58 hectares, and a popular place with Thais and visitors when it comes to exercise. At Lumphini Park, you can walk, jog, use the outside gym and free weights, cycle, rollerblade, practice Muay Thai kickboxing, play cricket – and all of it, free of charge. If you get up early in the morning before it gets hot, you’ll also see large groups of older Thais (and some visitors) practicing tai chi or dancing, and they’ll be more than happy to let you join them. The easiest way to get to Lumphini Park is to get off at the Lumphini underground station right next to it.

Outdoor Aerobics Classes – All over Bangkok, you’ll see outdoor aerobics classes cropping up as the work day comes to a close. Outside banks and supermarkets, in parks and even at schools, a large stage is set up and one or two aerobics instructors will be up there barking instructions to a huge crowd of, mostly, Thai women. It’s usually boiling hot and a bit polluted but, if you don’t mind both, you can get a very good workout for only a few baht. You might make some friends too. Check at your local supermarket, shopping mall, bank or park, as one of them is likely to have an outdoor aerobics class several nights a week.

Muay Thai Gyms – If you’re interested in learning a new sport, Muay Thai kickboxing has always been popular with Thais and is all the rage for westerners at the moment. Both men and women are starting to learn this traditional Thai sport and a better workout isn’t possible. With Muay Thai, you’ll soon notice just about every part of your body toning up but, be warned, it’s difficult. There are many Muay Thai gyms in Bangkok with fees as low as a few hundred baht per session or a few thousand for a month of daily workouts. To find a good Muay Thai gym, ask at your hotel or apartment building. Someone will know of one close to you.

Slimming Centers – If all else fails and you don’t feel like working out to lose weight, slimming centers can be a good alternative and there’s many of them in Bangkok. At a slimming center, services include body wraps, Thai massages, fat suction machines, or sweating off the weight using rubber suits. There’s no scientific evidence to show any of this works, but some people do still swear by it so, if you’re not in the exercising mood, it might be worth a shot.

Whatever you decide to do to try to lose weight in Bangkok, also try to stay away from the high-fat western food and eat the healthier Thai food instead. In the future, you’ll be happy you did when you’re still as slim in your 50s as you were in your 20s. Believe me.
