What positive changes are people making in Thailand?

Negeshia asked:

I think of how poor the people in the area were I stay and I have a couple of projects that I want to do. I was wondering what things other farang and Thai are either working on or have conceptualized to improve peoples (or animals) lives in Thailand.

My wife and I have plans on building a toilet and shower house over at a wat on the Lao side of the river. Part of our effort will provide a pump so they can get clean water.

I remember a guy saying he was retired but wanted to teach English but the Thai Government wouldn’t let him because of his retirement Visa. I wrote to the Bangkok Post, the American Consulate and the Thai Ministry of education. I’m sure others are doing a lot more. I’d like to spend more time doing things that make some kind of difference than spending 22 hour a day answering questions on Yahoo.

Living in Thailand

My father is collecting his retire. pension in his BofA account, but he lives in Thailand?

wedthaigirl asked:

Well, my father lived in the U.S. since the early 1970’s as an architect since immigrating here with my mother from Thailand. Anyhow, he moved back to Thailand in 1995 and in 2003, he came to visit me in the U.S. While he was here he had applied for his retirement pension directly deposited into a Bank of America account. Then, he moved back to Thailand and has been there ever since 2003. He withdraws funds from his account (that he receives from his retirement pension), then his debit card expired. He tried to log into his account with on-line banking. He called the Bank of America phone # to apply for another card. Then, a representative called him on my phone and he called them back from Thailand. They wanted to verify if he, indeed, had requested another card. They asked him all sorts of questions to verify his identity – including some weird, obscure facts that he must have given them at the time he opened his Bank of America account while he was here: like the answers to obscure questions like “What county did your daughter live in at (an address I never lived at before)?” He said they asked him some question that he didn’t have an answer for because I had never lived at this address. They hung up on him, saying he couldn’t answer their verifying questions. He’s really frustrated because he can’t get a renewed debit card – thus he can’t withdraw any money! What should he do? B of A is moot on this point saying he needs to remember this (errant) fact about a residence that I allegedly lived in according to their records? Also, they wanted him to remember his brother’s birthday (he has 13 brothers)!
FYI. It’s not that he can’t remember the answers to the questions (all he needs to do is ask his one brother what his birthday is), it’s that B of A is asking a question with an answer that is unanswerable because it’s asked in error. They asked what county of residence I lived in (that I never lived at). If he were to say that his daughter never lived at this particular address, they would say that he is not passing the verification tests. Arg!

Retire in Thailand

Business owners in Thailand, successes or regrets?

lil sammy asked:

Hi all. I’ve lived in Thailand (Phuket) for several years in the past. I miss it terribly, but now have the opportunity to purchase a business there near Krabi. It is a small guesthouse with new construction, nice location, and a decent profit margin.
I’m well aware of visa red tape, no land ownership, mai pen rai attitudes, etc… crap. And I have lawyers here in the US and one in Thailand helping me out.
I would plan to spend summers there, winters here in the US. We can afford the finacial risk and would have access to a proven reliable Thai staff.
My question is a more personal one–do any of you all own or have owned a business? Did it succeed or fail? Was it worth all of the stress or is one just best off waiting for retirement to return?
Thanks so much for any insight before I jump in :)
I would like to add that I do have a Thai partner (49/51), and I know first hand that the staff is reliable. Thanks, TYG
