thai retirement visa
Skipper asked:

Ok, I have hit another wall in the retirement visa application process regarding the “letter of gaurantee” from a bank.
In my case, I can prove that I have adequate money in a US bank. I can do this with a bank statemet. But a “letter of gaurantee” is also required. I use three different banks, and none of them knows what this “letter of gaurantee” is.
I have tried to call the Thai consulates, but can’t get to a live person to talk to.
Any ideas how to get this letter?

Here is what they want, quoting from the Thai Consulate website:
- In the case of submitting a bank statement, a letter of guarantee from the bank (an original copy) is required

Here is the URL to the Thai consulate site. If you scroll down to the area highlted as Required Documents you will see the statement:

Well, the French Embassy requires in addition to the printed out bank statements (which are easily to be forged with nowadays electronic equipment) an original letter of the bank on official letter-head stating that the bank account is existing and that it holds the appropriate balance. It seems that the Thai Embassy/Consulate also wants some type of assurance of the account managing institute..

The Thai government (especially the consulate and immigration) is notorious for that kind of thing, it’s never ending with the requests but not explaining things fully. My wife is having similar issues trying to get her Thai passport renewed here in the States. She must get a notary but all notaries will not notarise because the document is in Thai and the Thai embassy won’t accept a translation document which WE would need to pay for! The DC embassy is no better than the LA one, they both suck. Your better off talking to the voice machine cause if you get a real person they speak terribly, don’t know much and always ask if they can talk with a Thai person but when I turn the phone over to my wife they talk to her very rudely.

Show the bank the Thai documents and plead with them to work with you. Heck print out this yahoo document and let them know what your going through. Good luck my friend and remember Thailand is still worth it! Take Care.

go to your bank manager – ask if they could just write you a short letter on bank stationery stating that on such and such a date, the balance is what it is – and then have them sign it – submit that -

All that it means is they want a letter from your bank stating that the money is there in the bank and submit it to them on the day you get the letter not a week later good luck

As far as I know the procedure is pretty simple. You have to have Bt. 800.000 on a Thai bank account, deposited three months before the application. Some other paperwork, but nothing substantial.

Contact, they know what to do and how to do it. This is a reputable company, I’ve used their services in the past.

The letter of guarantee is from a Thai bank – the Thai banks all know what this is about.

You need 800,000 baht in a Thai bank – money in a U.S. bank is of no interest to Thai immigration.

The alternative is to show proof of sufficient monthly income. That’s a lot more paperwork hassle. Just put money in a Thai bank, get the letter, go to immigration and you’ll get your visa that day. It’s quite simple.
